it’s my story

Do you enjoy a morning or afternoon cuppa of tea? You may enjoying a pot with friends as a way to socialise, or prefer a cup at night to wind down before bed. But did you know that tea can be used in many household chores?

Before you toss those used leaves and tea bags in the bin, see if you can put them to good use with these five household tips:

1. Add flavour to your morning oats
Putting used tea bags to use can start with the first meal of the day. Hang a bag of chai or cinnamon spice tea in a pot of water as it boils to spice up your morning oats. This is a healthier option than pre-flavoured quick oat sachets, and more affordable as well!

2. Tenderise meat
Black tea is full of tannins, which naturally tenderise tough cuts of meat. Brew a pot of black tea, strain the leaves, and add it to a beef or seafood marinade. Economical cuts will be transformed into melt-in-your-mouth meals by dinnertime.

3. Clean up grease
The tannins in tea also act as an astringent, helping break down oils. This makes tea useful in cleaning up oily or greasy messes around the house. Brew a pot of tea using old bags or leftover leaves and let it cool. Fill a spray bottle to use on mirrors, countertops and appliances, or use it to soak dirty dishes whilst the tea is still hot.

4. Perk up plants
Most teas are mildly acidic, but can help acid-loving plants thrive. Steep used tea bags and use the brew to water ferns, citrus trees and gardenias. Tea leaves can be added to the soil or compost to increase nitrogen levels and encourage friendly bacteria to grow.

5. Deodorise around the house
Dry tea leaves can absorb and mask foul scents. Sprinkle them on musty carpets 20-60 minutes before vacuuming (Only use dry leaves, as wet ones may stain rugs!) to remove odors. Place a couple pinches in smelly shoes or put a small bowl in the refrigerator. You can even mix them in with the cat’s litter!
